Lurex Glam

“Lurex is the registered brand name of The Lurex Company, Ltd. for a type of yarn with a metallic appearance. The yarn is made from synthetic film, onto which a metallic aluminium, silver, or gold layer has been vaporised. “Lurex” may also refer to cloth created with the yarn.” (Source Wikipedia https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lurex)
I actually thought that the fabric was called Lurex, but it turns out it’s the name of the company that makes that type of yarn. So I don’t know if my dress was made with their yarn, but I will call it Lurex anyway…
It was quite popular in the 1950’s and the 1960’s not just for evening wear, but also in movies and tv shows (Catwoman’s suit in the 1960’s Batman tv series was made of Lurex). I love it because it is so glamorous and elegant and makes even the simplest dress design look special. It is quite sensitive though, as it’s very easy to accidentally pull one of those metallic threads!
I found this beautiful green Lurex dress at the Midcentury market, which takes place twice a year in London (Camden). I love the fit of the dress, even though it doesn’t leave me a lot of room to eat (or breathe lol), but who cares, I just had to grab this unique piece! I’ve only worn it once so far, at a fancy restaurant in London, where I got a lot of stares and a couple of compliments at the ladies room!

My shoes are Sergio Rossi (similar here) and I’ve had them for quite a few years, but this classic shape never really goes out of fashion. My gloves are vintage (similar here) and they were my grandmas and the vintage clutch I bought from the Classic Car Boot Sale in London for £5 or £10 if I recall correctly! The brand is Salisbury’s and I don’t think it exists anymore (just used ones on ebay).
